What is paintless dent removal (and is it right for your car)?

Everything you need to know about PDR — how it works, when it's suitable, and why it preserves your factory finish better than traditional body shops.

Paintless dent removal (PDR) is a specialised repair technique used to fix dents, dings, and body-line creases without ever touching the original paint. Instead of sanding, filling, and respraying the panel — which is how traditional panel shops work — a PDR technician uses precision rods and specialised tools to gently reshape the metal from behind until the dent is gone.

How it works

Every dent has a 'high' and 'low' — the visible depression, plus the raised metal around it. A PDR tech reads the damage with a reflective light board, then accesses the back of the panel through existing openings (window channels, trim gaps, or temporarily removed interior panels) to push the metal back into its original shape, millimetre by millimetre.

Because the factory paint is never disturbed, the final result is invisible — there's no colour mismatch, no overspray, and no risk of rust creeping in under a respray years down the line.

When PDR is the right choice

PDR works best when:

  • The paint is still intact — no cracks, chips, or flaking
  • The dent is on a flexible metal panel (most doors, fenders, bonnets, roofs, and quarter panels)
  • The damage hasn't stretched the metal too far (very deep dents may need a hybrid repair)

Hail damage, car-park door dings, shopping trolley dents, and body-line creases are all classic PDR candidates. If you're unsure whether your damage qualifies, send a few photos and we'll give you an honest assessment.

Why it's better than a panel shop

  • Factory paint is preserved — better resale value
  • Faster — most repairs in hours, not days
  • Cheaper — no paint, filler, or labour-heavy prep work
  • No risk of colour mismatch or overspray on surrounding panels
  • Environmentally cleaner — no paint or solvent waste
If the paint is intact, there's almost never a reason to respray a panel. PDR keeps your car looking exactly how it left the factory.
